Church Banners

If there's a banner behind the choir loft saying, "He is risen indeed," it must be Easter. If it says, "Christ is born," it's Christmas. And if the banner shows a picture of rising flames, the season can be none other than Pentecost. Houses of worship often use banners mark the seasons of the church year.

Church banners have become commonplace in the sense that most Christian churches display them. The thought and artistry that goes into them, however, are far from commonplace. Christian symbols, such as a cross or crucifix (Christ's death), wheat and grapes (Holy Communion) or dove (the Holy Spirit) can be portrayed in any artistic style - angular or curved, simple or ornate, brightly colored or subdued and neutral.

Church traditions are not the only inspiration for banners. Other themes include prayer, hope, giving thanks, and singing praises.

Banners can also be placed in other areas of the church. A "Welcome" banner in the narthex will catch the eye of visitors and the Sunday school kids will love depictions of Noah's Ark, Daniel, and the lost sheep.

A good supply of church banners, changed regularly, will supply the congregation with beauty and inspiration all year long.
